PRIMARY SCHOOL

BBS Primary School has been certified by the Italian Department for Education as a “paritaria” school and therefore is embedded within the Italian school system. We are also integrated into the Cambridge Assessment International Education programme. These 2 separate programmes mean that BBS offers an integrated educational package that is unique in the quality and quantity of the materials offered.

By integrating the Italian syllabus with Cambridge Curricula BBS students receive an certificate recognised by the Italian government as well as Cambridge Checkpoints Certificates which are internationally recognised for their level of excellence.

Teaching

Integration is strength

Our integrated programmes have been created to adhere to guidelines from the Italian Department for Education (MUIR). We also work  to the Cambridge International Programmes in Science, Maths and English as a first language, allowing us to add extra depth to these subjects. In the Primary School Maths, Science, Geography, Art, P.E. Social Studies, Music Drama and ICT are lead exclusively in English by highly qualified mother-tongue teachers Italian and History are taught in Italian.

Bilingual teaching

The BBS Primary School educational programme is 80% taught in English, with particular focus on learning English. Students are able to use English both conversationally in everyday life and in specialist academic contexts. We see the acquisition and use of English not as ends in themselves, but rather tools to transmit and reinforce knowledge and skills.

Methodology

Continual growth

In the first 2 years of the Primary (the Lower Biennio) the teaching focus is firmly on the child in reflection of the teaching methods of the nursery. We use Italian and English text books and concrete resources to enable learning.
From year 3 teaching moves towards developing critical thinking and learning how to approach abstract concepts. This is when the children also start ICT and Drama.
Year 5 of the Primary draws in teachers from our Middle School, preparing the children for a softer, more harmonious move to Middle School. Our aim is to create a continuous learning journey through effective and efficient preparation.

Objectives and tools

Our objective at BBS is that, as well as linguistic skills and teaching objectives, children learn certain other values. We want them to be self aware individuals with a sense of reasonability and a civic sense.

We want to them to know how to be part of a community. To achieve this aim we use other tools in conjunction with the Italian and Cambridge programmes consisting in a range of experiential activities so that students are equipped with their own tools to help them find solutions, ask questions and seeks answers as individuals.

Cambridge exams

Cambridge Primary is a high level educational system that develops skills and understanding in English, Maths and Science. The Cambridge programme offers excellent teacher support and an integrated evaluation system to monitor student progress and results.

Final exams

Cambridge Primary Checkpoint

Cambridge Primary Checkpoints provide comprehensive feedback on strengths and weaknesses in each subject. The Cambridge Primary Checkpoint Tests are taken at the end of the Primary Cycle in year 5. Tests are marked by Cambridge International and each candidate receives a breakdown of marks and a final certificate highlighting the results achieved.
